SEO, custom code & legal pages
Control how your community appears in search and when shared, add tracking or chat scripts, and edit the Terms and Privacy pages.
Three settings that change things members don't see directly: how your community shows up in search and in link previews, the scripts that run on its pages, and the legal text behind it. Use them when you launch the community, add an analytics or chat tool, or update your terms.
SEO and scripts live in your community's Settings → Advanced; the Terms and Privacy pages are edited on the pages themselves.
Before you start
- Each area has its own permission, so you can hand them out separately: SEO & social preview, Custom scripts and Legal pages — see Community roles & permissions. The community owner has all three.
Page SEO
Settings → Advanced → Page SEO Settings sets the community's search and sharing details. A Preview shows roughly how it looks as a search result.
| Field | Used for |
|---|---|
| Focus Keyword / Keyphrase | The page keywords |
| Page SEO Title | The browser tab title, the search result title and the title of shared links |
| Meta Description | The search snippet and the description of shared links |
| Share image | The image shown when someone shares a link to your community |
Custom scripts
Settings → Advanced → Custom Scripts / Code adds code to every page of the community — an analytics tag, a pixel, a chat widget.
There are three sections, each with a <head> code and a <body> code box:
| Section | When it runs |
|---|---|
| All visitors | On every page load, for everyone, signed in or not |
| Logged-out visitors only | Only while the visitor isn't signed in. It doesn't run again after they sign in. |
| Logged-in members only | When a signed-in member opens the community, and right after a visitor signs in — useful for conversion tracking |
Scripts run once per page load.
Caution
Code here runs on every page, for every member. A broken or malicious script can break the community or read what members see. Only paste code from sources you trust, and only give the Custom scripts permission to people you'd trust with your whole community.
- Member-only code is never sent to signed-out visitors.
- Signing out doesn't undo code that has already run in that page.
Terms and Privacy pages
Your community has its own Terms (/terms) and Privacy (/privacy) pages. There's no
settings tab for them — you edit them in place:
- Open
/termsor/privacyin your community while signed in as an admin. - Click the edit icon.
- Write the text in the editor and click Update Settings.
Until you write something, the pages show placeholder text.
Note
The sign-up form links to the Terms of Use link and Privacy Policy link you pick in
General Settings, not to these pages automatically. To point
sign-up at them, choose a custom link to /terms and /privacy there.
Things worth knowing
- Your Terms and Privacy are what members agreed to when they joined. Changing them is a legal matter, not a copy edit — the Legal pages permission exists separately for that reason.
- SEO and code changes apply on the next page load.
